In his recent post “The Triumph of the Nerds,” Steve Sailer linked to a picture of a Wikipedia editors’ meetup, being wise enough to not gross out his readers. I, on the other hand, am not so merciful. Witness the end of your civilization:
My God. A sadder example of humanity has never been captured on film. These are the people who edit Wikipedia for free in their spare time, in all their triple-chinned, adult acne-ridden, onanistic glory. They even have a token chick, who bears a disturbing resemblance to the middle-aged doofus on the far-right. The douche in the center with his arms folded is the only one who remotely resembles a normal human being.

Who — whether on World of Warcraft, Dungeons and Dragons, the local Linux fan group, LARPers, videogamers, or even internet forums — makes up this crowd? Mostly young men. Lots of them. Even so, Wikipedia’s contributors are a tiny minority among the male population. The Wikipedia volunteer list will I suspect mirror that for most open-source software: underemployed males in entry-level technical jobs, basement-dwelling graduate school dropouts, and people incapacitated by mental or physical health.
Admittedly, I’m not as negative towards the concept of Wikipedia itself. I wouldn’t use it as an authoritative, primary source or cite it in any books or formal academic papers, but if you’re looking to start learning more about something, Wikipedia works just fine. But dear Lord, don’t try and claim that the blubbery, asocial cast-outs pictured above represent any sort of “triumph.” They’re losers, failures, further evidence of our society’s decline. These are people who NEED to be bullied, in order to beat them into line and keep them from polluting the Internet and the world with their Aspie drivel.
And for the love of Yahweh, stop talking about “nerd culture” or “geek culture,” people. Obsessing over anime, overpriced tech toys and obscure sci-fi movies doesn’t constitute a “culture,” any more than jacking off five times a day counts as a hobby. Culture is the shared language and ways of living and thinking of a people rooted in centuries to millennia of existence, not what social dropouts use to fill the void of their meaningless lives.

Yeah. I think his theory is that in premodern times, a generally high violence level is what causes people to man up and go with the flow more, while conversely a modern times, people withdraw, while obsession with taste increases, all of which would cause nerds to get nerdier and poncier “cool kids” like Bardemu to get more pompous, status posturing, “taste signalling” (see the discussion of the lack of taste amongst nerds, for example) and sillier (could the likes of Bardemu get poncier and more posturing and coldly lacking in empathy to his fellow man? – as the violence rate continues to decrease, the possibility is quite likely). Cool kids become hipsters concerned with gradations of status and marking themselves above the uncool, while relatively nerdy kids become full nerds, both of which are terrible occurances.
This aligns with Bardemu’s suggestion to victimise nerds to get denerd them, but also suggests that victimising one another is a way that the cool kids could help nerds get less nerdy and would also have the benefit of turning the cool kids from the status posturing empty sacks of flesh they are into worthwhile humans.

Frankly, I’ve never once witnessed this supposed “bullying magically normalizes nerds” theory work in real life. In fact quite the opposite happens: as a result of bullying, nerds withdraw deeper and deeper into their clique and hobbies as a form of escapism and rebellion.
Most young nerds do not have the thick skin and objectivity to be able to stand back and go “maybe these people are bullying me because I’m doing something wrong and should change.” The lack of the aforementioned traits, combined with the fact that bullies rarely offer concrete explanations for their actions (“Take this NERD!”) instead tends to create this response: “Jerks! Well if that’s how “normal” people are, I don’t wanna be like them at all!”
I think socializing nerds via normal people taking them under their wings and guiding them would yield better results than some random bullies shoving them into a locker.

The term “Computer Geek” or “Computer Nerd” originated back in the late 1960′s to describe the type of programmers who hung out after mid-night in computer labs at technical universities like UC-Berkley or Stanford in order to utilize the free time on the time-share machines. They typically were dorky and socially awkward.
In 1969, they were a tiny share of engineering majors, much less the overall student body. Definitely not an important or even recognized social group.

They don’t look that nerdy and they certainly look much less beta-fied. Besides, they were off doing physics mostly, though Bohr and perhaps others did make some political statements. But Dirac didn’t go around daily messing with our mores, laws, and metapolitical beliefs about things like history and art.
The problem is that these aspies and lesbians, on average, have low resistance to modern nonsense in some ways, though they may have higher resistance in certain respects. I agree with your view. I would add that the physicists depicted in 1927 would become nerds today. At the time they weren’t immersed in nerd-acceptance, in betafying agitprop, or in postmodern nonsense more generally. So they turned out a little more normal and a little less socio-culturally harmful.

They did things like fight duels (Max Born; he hated it because he was short, but he did it anyway), have threesomes (Schroedinger had an open relationship with wife and secretary … in the 1930s when Nazis would kill you for such things), renounce their citizenship (Einstein) and get into drunken barfights and marry a tavern girl (Pauli). This is only one definition. It is entirely valid to talk about a “nerd culture,” or a “corporate culture” or a “subculture.”

Totally contrary to my experience. Popular kids were liberals, the nerds and outcasts went over to the right. The experience, through most of my schooling years, of been persecuted without cause by the group, and having one’s pleas for protection largely ignored by the authorities, can make a very powerful case for hatred of socialism, distrust of government, and the right to keep and bear arms in an adolescent head.

You know what nerds need?
1. Masculine Role Models – One anecdotal story is two friends who both are major games with one a huge Star Wars fan and the other a big Anime fan. They are also big fans of Bruce Lee. I don’t think, he alone, is responsible for everything. But the SW fan is about to graduate with stellar grades (with a BA and MA after only 4 years), leagues of friends, and a pretty cute girlfriend after spending his first year training hard and studying moderately. You should watch his kung fu skit-demonstration that he performed for a cultural show, he looks badass. The other is enjoying his college life training in MMA. He is more than capable to kick your ass with a hard foot in the face (though I will admit he deleted his anime hard drive, but he still enjoy them on a more moderate level). A far different man from when I knew him in high school, a chubby kid full of hate and bitterness at the world.
2. Encouragement to fight back. You know what they tell so many little kids these days. If you get bullied, go tell the teacher and never ever fight back. What you get is a whole lot of kids bullied for years. A few man up and fight back as you want (IE Zangrief kid). A much lesser ends up shooting everything. Most just withdraw to their hobbies and give up the idea of becoming normal and accepted, yet somehow carry more shame of themselves and their interests despite turning to completely embrace it. What we need more is more people telling others to stand up, even if it mean physical confrontation. Telling kids to ignore when it fails to work just make the kid feel weak. If the kid decide to ask the teacher, it just make them feel even more helpless and weak as they can’t handle their own problems.
3. Sports. While I know many nerds growing up might not be able to handle football. There are many on the line that the spirit of competition and ambition to win does help toughen the spirit of the nerdy kid at least. Plus there are many different types of sports they a kid might like even if the most common like football and baseball are out (lots of people with nerdy interests love fencing, and I don’t think you can categorize them/us as the same league of your nerds you hate).
There are 3 ideas that can help nerds much more than bulling or your hatred of them. You idea makes no sense at all. What they need is experiences they give them a backbone and some kid of fashion sense. Positive role models, a more macho culture, and more sports will do much more good than telling more people to beat them down when they 8 or 18.

Transforming Nerds into commandos is unrealistic. They have passed the cut-off date for socializing boys into men, thus, the die is cast that they will always be neutered.
If you think about it, to even enact one small part of your idealistic plans require the reformatting of the entire American Culture.
It is now easier to destroy it than reform it. Reform means you have to listen to your opposition. Destruction means you silence them.
It takes all kinds, right? If you want something like Wikipedia to exist then you’re going to have to have people who are willing to devote their life – sex life included – to the cause. I see nothing wrong with it. I confess to being the one who laughed him out of the Chateau. At the time he deserverd it. He had since calmed down as we all learn to rein in the mouthy punk as we get out of our early 20s.
I have next to zero interest in “quant” stuff and I’m not too sure what to make out of his violent/peaceful times Big Theory. It is possible he’s on to something in concept, even if his sweeping applications of that theory may be heavy-handed.
However, his 80s/90s music posts are fun, and though I don’t normally comment much on that topic elsewhere, it’s very interesting to me. He’s the only blogger I know of who regularly visits that subject.

My suspicion is that the hatred comes from the genetic/biochemical level. Nerds are low testosterone men. Low testosterone men are weak, flee from confrontation, are less prone to violence and hence have a low position on the social/tribal hierarchy, and would perish quickly in the brutal existence of our ancestors from which we evolved.

Wikipedia is a cut and paste operation. Her articles might be well-written, but that doesn’t imply having a ‘fine brain’. People of meager intellect can be good at writing articles so long as those articles contain no original ideas, which by definition no wikipedia article can have.
For that matter I don’t find most wikipedia articles, even those that are hotly contested and therefore recieve the most scrutiny, are particularly well written. In fact the more scrutinized by sysops, et al an article it is the more likely it is to violate editorial policies such as weasel wording non-relevant and biased information into the article. Of course the policy of No Original Research will never be violated, so actual scientific discoveries won’t make an appearance until they are covered by the New York Times (which in most cases will be never).
So wikipedia is basically reality as defined by J-School and Nerds. Finest brains indeed. No one who argues over wiki edits 18 hours a day is doing anything meaningful with their lives, and probably isn’t bright enough to contribute Original Research to start with. Not that there is anything wrong with that, but you don’t get to have the messianic world-changing attitude that wikipedians have without actually changing the world in a meaningful way. Copying and pasting from mainstream publications isn’t meaningful in any way.

Back in the 1990′s I worked on a DOD sponsored Software Development project for eight years. There was a young guy there who just ploughed through the women. Young, old, married, single. They just had to be reasonably good looking. He even nailed the big-boss’s secretary (old enough to be his mom, but big tits). He looked like a young George Clooney, was very social, teased the women, everyone liked him. A true born natural, the most effective lady-killer I ever knew. A possible case of a kid on a nerd trajectory, which I may have corrected: a few days ago I was at the ballfields with my son, and a scrawny, awkward red-headed boy of about eight was milling about and I had him join us in throwing a ball around. He threw badly for his age, and couldn’t catch. With the latter, the diagnosis was easy – told him “just keep looking at the ball and don’t be scared of it.” It worked.
With throwing, he started doing this goofy-ass, face-saving tard wind-up, with a predictably weak and errant ball trajectory. He was doing it to cover his embarrassment at not knowing how to throw.

I can see your point that it is largely unrealistic, at least on a national scale. Though I must retort that it still happens on the individual scale. Else my anecdotal story of two guys though a positive masculine role model (Bruce Lee) with a sport (or in this case, Martial Arts – Kung Fu and MMA) would not happened. And this occurred during college. So I don’t see your point of how it is too late unless you are only talking about a guy past 30 or something. Also, my main point of sports is PLAYING them, not the major leagues. Granted, even playing a sport is under attack, but you aren’t bring that counterpoint up.

Why do people keep defending nerds by saying they make useful technology? Who is the technology most useful for? Women! Everything nerds created to make life easier benefited women more than men, and lightened their load and gave them enough leisure time to be bored and embrace feminism. Most of the tech they created served to either make men softer, make men redundant, or make female domestic work more convenient. All of which paved the way for feminism.
Vaccum cleaners, washing machines, electric stoves, disposable diapers, microwave ovens, dryers, dishwashers, garbage disposals, cars, trucks, food delivery systems, supermarkets. It’s no coincidence technological progress and feminism go hand in hand. The technology gives the woman no need for a man except as an ego boost machine and sperm donor. It makes domestic duties so easy that she has the time to become a career woman and is bored enough to pursue it.

Yes, it made women’s lives easier. But it’s also made women redundant, at least as wives. A wife still has social value, and that’s individually subjective, but their economic value has been universally decimated.
Imagine coming home from work after a long day, and still having to spend hours preparing and cooking food, cleaning your clothes and home, and all these other time-consuming chores. It was several extra hours of labor every day, so having someone to delegate the work to (ie. a wife) was desirable, even necessary.
As time went by, labor-saving devices were created that made household chores easier, and commercial enterprises innovated so that domestic errands outside the home, be it food shopping or dry cleaning or whatever, became more convenient and less time consuming. The value of a wife has been in decline for decades, and a market correction has been overdue.
Modern divorce laws have prompted men to do an audit, and the findings are pretty conclusive; wives are economically unviable. Like cubicle drones that stretch out an hour of work to fill an 8 hour shift or an assembly line worker replaced by robots, the domestic maintenance workforce is being downsized.
Technology made women’s lives easier, yes. It has also made men’s lives easier, in that we can do our own domestic upkeep quickly and effortlessly, without having to sub-contract it to a wife.
Anthropologically speaking, negative peer pressure IS more realistic – and practiced – than swpl hugs and 34th place t-ball “trophies.”

If you’re talking about nerds over the age of 35 (when, scientifically speaking, is roughly when one’s brain essentially crystalizes and slows down in terms of making new neural connections) then you might have a point. However, the Game/PU up community is pretty much formulated around guys losing their virginity in their mid to late 20′s.
Bullies have been utilizing this method for decades. According to your theory, nerdom should be basically wiped out by now. Don’t even bother bringing up the supposed “increase in anti-bullying measures” theory either. Teachers have never been able to completely monitor and control the behavior of kids. In fact, part of the reason for the dysfunctional state of youth culture is the public school system: i.e. leaving a bunch of kids together with minimal adult supervision for 7 hours a day. Also, if anything, bullying has gotten worse; the stuff I see kids do nowadays makes the bullying I witnessed while growing up look like kids glove stuff.
Take note of the prevalence of adult nerds as well. The most intense bullying and social shaming occurs throughout early childhood and grade school. If you’re theory was correct, there should be no adult nerds (or at least much fewer) because bullying/shaming should supposedly have beaten the nerdiness out of them by adulthood.

That methodology is a regular part of school life that only works on non-nerds (who don’t need that much help in the first place.) You’re not suggesting anything helpful or new, you’re just regurgitating the status quo, which as noted previously, has done two things to stem the tide of nerdery: Jack and shit, and Jack left town.
For the reasons outlined above, bullying/detached social shaming does not work. So what does? Socialization of nerds within a group of normal kids. In fact, ultimately, the rise of nerd “culture” is more than likely a symptom of the breakdown of local communities/tribalism. The fact that “nerds” looked as they did back in the 20′s in comparison to now, is more than notable.
Within a tight community of friends and acquaintances, nerds would be much more receptive to social correction. As it stands now, bullying and social shaming from others comes from within a context of atomized individuals, or to put it more simply: the reason why bullying and social shaming have failed to check nerd behavior is because nerds have essentially been receiving said bullying and social shaming from strangers whom they have little to no connection to.
Say a nerd is acting like a nerd and you say a disparaging remark. If said nerd does not know you, you’re just going to come of as a stranger being a jackass, and thus incite defensiveness. However, what if you are either a friend, or even a friend of a friend, or at least a mostly friendly acquaintance that he respects? I’d bet all of my money that said nerd would be much more receptive to any critical remarks you make.
Finally, no, I’m not saying this is something to be implemented on a national scale. But on an individual scale? Yes. The fact is, Firepower, you have knowledge. Knowledge is power; power is responsibility; thus, knowledge is responsibility.
You have the knowledge to act towards nerds in a way that is more conducive to eliminating their negative traits. With such knowledge, if you still engage in detached bullying/shaming, you are essentially willingly choosing to pour gasoline on the fire that is the nerd “subculture.”
No, you can’t save every nerd, obviously, and I’ll be the first to admit that there are some nerds that are so Aspie as to be beyond saving; but those nerds that just need a hand up outnumber the aforementioned. This brings up an interesting point. I think that a lot of the hullabaloo around nerds (such as in this thread) is a result of semantic confusion. When the word “nerd” comes up, most people’s opinions divide into two camps: 1. Intelligent people who are socially awkward and could benefit from socializing. 2. Super Aspie fucktards beyond all hope. In terms of views of nerds, I suspect that we may be on opposite ends of this spectrum.
Part of my argument is that those nerds that fit into camp 2′s view are in the minority in comparison to the former. Thus, restoring shame within a social context would be much more effective as a whole to aiding camp 1 than detached bullying/shaming. In fact, I suspect that context-less random bullying and shaming may push nerds of the camp 1 variety into camp 2.
In short, I think a lot of nerds are not the “dregs of society” (especially compared to the likes of thugs and trailer park trash.) In fact, I think with proper socialization, a lot of nerds could become much better than they are.

I agree with this guy. I also want to add in that nerds tend to transform into bullies that are worse than the people who bully them. I dated a guy who was an unyielding comic book geek. He once bitched me out because I didn’t consider Flash Thompson a legitimate villain within the Spider-Man cannon. We broke up. It was one of the best things that could have happened to me. There are reasons to hate nerds- they transform into elitist, superior, pieces of shit, who worship commercialism and allow themselves to be economically exploited. I don’t feel sorry for nerds at all. They rightly get the crap beat out of them because they’re assholes. Women don’t date them because they’re assholes.
