Of course this proposal is offensive. Of course the Muslims are insulting us by even bringing it up. What you don’t get is that the Cordoba Initiative, like the headscarf issue in France, is a symptom of a larger problem – diversity. This isn’t a debate about whether Muslims should be able to build a mosque near Ground Zero – it’s a debate about whether Muslims belong in America to begin with. It’s a debate about whether pluralistic, multicultural nations are sustainable without devolving into a tribal, terminal feeding frenzy. I agree with Professor Hale on this.
While American Muslims are much more amenable to the local culture then European Muslims, they still insist on being an alien people within a nation that is not their own. The chances of them turning the U.S. into Baghdad West is slim, despite the Chicken Little crying of the neocons. Either they will cease to be Muslims and integrate themselves into the American tapestry or the natives will expel them with force, possibly violently. Humanity’s tribal impulses ensure that there is no 
possibility of a peaceful Lennonite paradise where we all get over our differences, join hands and sing kumbaya as the sun sets.
On a related note, Andrew Cuomo’s got some huge, solid brass balls for throwing his weight behind a project that most of the people he expects to vote for him for governor angrily oppose. Guess what – he’s going to win the election anyway. That’s why I’ve got no sympathy for you suckers. You whine and bitch about how the politicians are no good and how you want change, but when crunch time comes you (re-)elect the people you supposedly hate again and again. FB, I thought you were going to let me down. 9-11 is a very touchy subject with me: my wife lost 6 close friends in the WTC; I grew up looking at it, worked in it, and walk past the hole every morning on the way to work. But then my man steps up with the real issue: “whether Muslims belong in America to begin with.” Kudos. Couldn’t agee more. I am the grandson of immigrants with folks back in the old country, but unrestricted immigration of people whose religion tells them to work to conquer, openly and in secret, the country that gives them shelter? I don’t think so.

Europe has let in far more Muslims, as a percentage of its total immigrant population, than America or Canada (we’ve got more East Asians, Indians, Hispanics, Caribbeaners, etc.), so it may actually go Islamic, while we just have lots of inter-group conflict, and the State stepping in to play referee. Either way, the West is in for “interesting times”.

Excellent post. The problem is not the government or the evil press (as movement conservatives constantly assert); it’s the damned people and the universal franchise. Even now, continue Medicaid and Medicare and overly-generous health and pension plans, and all the old, white tea partiers will peacefully return home. Continue farm subsidies and the rural vote is set. Continue unlimited college aid for all middle class kids (who are all above average, of course) and you have the suburban vote locked in. And make enough noise about “illegal” immigration and everyone will quickly assert they’re fine with millions of Mexicans and Muslims here, as long as they come “legally.” I have adopted as my mantra your take on Roissy’s axiom: Tribalism + democracy + stupidity = racist idiocracy.

The United States has historically respected individual rights more than Europe has, thus making pluralism more successful. Descendants of various European tribes who hated each other in Europe have lived quite happily side-by-side in America, even intermarrying to the point where the differences between the French tribe, English tribe and German tribe are no longer relevant in the United States.
Some problems emerge when you bring in a group of people who are hostile to the concept of individual right, as traditional Muslims are, but the key to assimilation is for America to foster individual rights, not deny them. (Not to say that we should be letting them in the country in the first place, just how we should deal with the ones who are already here)

But he’s wrong that the protest against this mosque doesn’t matter. The diversity=doubleplusgood mentality is still very strong. Changing won’t happen overnight. Anger at the mosque is probably going to be the first in a long line of events where mainstream America loses its White-guilt and diversity at all cost thinking.

OF COURSE Muslims don’t belong in the US.
But you are wrong to assume that Muslims cannot create aspects of Muslim rule in the US.
First, Blacks are 12.5% of the population, and are broadly sympathetic to Muslims, many being Muslim themselves (Louis Farrakhan) or endorsing Muslim hatred of the US (Rev. Wright, Trinity United Congregation, and of course Barack Obama). Blacks will for the most part (95% or so) side WITH MUSLIMS AGAINST WHITES.
Period.
Second, violence by Muslims is aimed to provoke surrender. Osama bin Laden WAS RIGHT: AMERICA IS WEAK AND LACKS THE WILL TO FIGHT. Osama and other Jihadist believe that kill enough Americans, in spectacular fashion, and the power centers of America, including Bloomberg, Obama, Dems in Congress, Cuomo, etc. will surrender significant portions of America:
1. Establishment of Islam as a religion that cannot by law be insulted (I know many Blacks and Hispanics professionally through a Charity who would endorse this whole-heartedly).
2. Allowing Polygamy including Welfare payments/tributes for polygamous wives as in Europe.
3. Tax payer supported Muslim schools.
4. Second class citizenship for non-Muslims wrt Muslim rights/sensibilities, etc.
Muslims believe extreme violence, support of Blacks (and Hispanics), and differential birth-rates will allow them to conquer America, not the least which is the extreme weakness of our elites which begs for more attacks, the more spectacular and bloody and dominant.
I agree that anger against the Mosque is critical to building an “American” identity that is largely White, traditionalist, and questions why Muslims are allowed to remain in America in the first place.
If Muslims are removed, then we can start asking why Mexicans don’t live in their own country instead of America.
