After seeing the usual suspects on this Roissy post claiming the pictured girl isn’t that hot so they can look discerning, I was going to write a brief rant spelling out why they’re full of shit, but as it turns out, Roissy himself has already done the job for me:

OK. Since all of you fuckers know exactly what I look like, and know exactly what my woman looks like, I’m going to weigh in here. Just so that you can’t attribute all numbers below 8 to “shut-in internet nerdling”ness.
Some people are clearly posturing, but not necessarily all of them.
There are two things that are almost invariably overlooked in these inane debates:
(1) Some people’s rankings are heavily skewed according to ethnicity.
(2) “Pretty” and “sexy” are not the same thing, and they have different weights on different people’s scales.
Regarding #1, the Roissy girl has an extremely strong Caucasus/Near/Middle Eastern look. As much as I hate to tell you guys, some men, like me, just aren’t into that look.
Regarding #2, it’s quite possible to be extremely sexy without being all that classically pretty (like Marilyn Monroe),** and it’s also quite possible to be classically perfect without exuding much sexuality (like, say, Alexandra Ambrosio).
Roissy’s girl is much closer to the latter of these. So much, in fact, that the commentariat has made a point of declaring just how fresh-faced and sweet-looking (read: “doesn’t look sexual”) she is.
So, if a man likes a more raw sexual look to his women, then maybe he’s not downgrading the rankings after all.
So, for someone who is the perfect storm of these categories, the seemingly deflated rankings aren’t deflated at all.
I’m not a big fan of the Caucasus look, and I’m a neanderthal who likes raw sexuality. So in my book she’s like a 6.5 or a 7.
But (gasp) I can totally understand how she might rank as high as 9 with other commenters.
Anyone ranking her lower than I do is clearly posing, since, again, I pretty much select against every single one of her characteristics (except for the true universals, such as “not fat”).
But, as far as quibbling over a point or two, a lot of people really need to shut the fuck up and stop being so solipsistic. It is PERFECTLY reasonable for there to be a 2-3 point spread between ratings of the same girl.
It is perfectly reasonable if my 5 is your 7.5, or my 7 is your 9.5, or vice versa for either.
Because …
… wait for it …
… NOT EVERYONE LIKES EXACTLY THE SAME THING.

Epoxytocin, you said basically what I was going to. I would rate her a 6. Very NICE 6, but only a 6. Am I posturing? I don’t think so, I’m currently in a disaster of a relationship with a 5 who is a single mom. I’m a slow learner… but I’m also looking for a 6+ for an actual LTR, not looking to game my way into Jessica Alba, and I have limitations. (IE, work 60+ hours as a keyboard jockey, THEN work on the household sh!t, see how much time is left to actually get your head together and work out. I miss my waistline more than my mind…)
Yeah, I have high standards for beauty, and I can game an 8 or 9 (Wish I could upload the pics – worked with an Indian chick, 5’0″, 34D or so, 95 # – that’s how much my DOG weighs, for chrissake… :-) She was fun to play with! )
But I go for the “sexy” look, too. And I have a weak spot for Indian women. (edit, insert Cute and Hot in there, Indian women still have the same problems all other women do.)
And as for me, at 34, earning $100K+, told I’m handsome, I’d still only rate myself as a 6. Decent conversationalist, good tongue, like to play, but receded hairline, thinned on top, overweight (220 @ 5’9″, 40″ waistline), no debt, but no rating any more, either. (Bought a house, fought a court battle, these two wiped me out when I lost my job… Now I’m rebuilding.)
So if I’m rating myself too high, tell me, but since I only see target’s face clearly, and can tell she’s skinny, but she’s not my type…? I can see someone else rating her a 9, but I’m not rating her that high. Personality might change it later, but just on an unclear body pic? Not gonna rate that 9 for me.

I’ll admit that being a porn addict and sub-human will skew my tastes off the male norm when it comes to a topic as delicate at this, but this girl is far too plain to be a 7. She’s not ugly, but she’s just a plain, inoffensive female, hence my ranking of 5 for her. Nails and heels aren’t going to rescue her and push her above anything other than a 5.5, and best personality in the world just ensures that she stays a hug buddy.
And for what it’s worth, one of my brother’s best friends could be this girl’s twin, so the whole “he’d faint in real life” around such a girl meme is rather foolish given that I’ve been exposed to such women with no effect on interest.

The problem is that rating her at 7 is a massive inflation of the rating scale. I’d understand if some said she was a 6 allowing for tastes in such a woman, but she’s barely cute, and she’s simply a plain looking female. As I stated on his blog, I think with his supposed level of game, he could do far better as his colleague VK has done. This isn’t jealousy, but simply my personal preferences coming into clash with those of Roissy and his community…
I think she’s about a 6 too. Usually when someone posts a picture of a girl, I imagine her in a normal, everyday life setting, since a bad or good photograph can change the way a woman comes across depending. Obviously, I’m a (heterosexual) woman, so I’m viewing attraction through a different prism. Attraction varies.
Some guys think I’m a 6 (or lower, I’m sure), and some guys think I’m hotter. I think most people have accurate ideas of where they fall in terms of looks and who their “niche market” is.
For example, the guys that rate this girl a 5 (or below) might not even be in her range of taste at all, so their judgment is immaterial to her. I’m sure a frat boy wouldn’t find me sexually attractive as an academic type who’s a bit older would, because I dress and present myself in a certain way to appeal to the latter category.
I’ve said before that I’m not looking to be everyone’s “type”, which is why I don’t take it personally when men find me unattractive in the Roissysphere.

In that picture, she’s wearing clothes that you’d wear to go grocery shopping, and it doesn’t look like she’s wearing make-up. Rating Roissy’s girl a 6 or 7 does not necessarily indicate nerdy posing. I’m usually much more generous with my ratings than most of Roissy’s readers but that girl does nothing for me – cute but not hot. A genuine 6-7. Agree 100% with Epoxytocin and Jean.
One thing I might add is that some guys seem to have a thing for cute, wholesome-looking girly girls. That’s fine, but they shouldn’t assume that all guys are like this (or should be!). Some guys prefer a more womanly shape and aura.

Maybe part of it is that women, in general, look better in real life. This is why you can walk through a college campus and it seems like every other girl is model material. But if you were to pull up those same girls’ facebook profiles, suddenly they’re not-so-hot.
