Two revealing observations on marriage

The long-form post I had planned for today is postponed until tomorrow. Until then, here’s something to tide you over:

Have you noticed that there are countless wedding magazines, catalogs, and stores aimed at women, but none for men?

At the same time, have you noticed that there are countless anti-marriage websites, essays, and blogs aimed at men, but almost none for women? The Sandra Tsing Loh article that made its way around the blogosphere a month back is all I could find.

Lengthy blog posts aren’t always necessary to make a good point. Sometimes, simply highlighting the smallest of details is enough.

Yup. Pretty revealing alright. Women’s media has a laser-beam focus on getting women to marry and the conceit associated with the ceremony. Men’s media has long focused on the woe that accompanies marriage for men, either tongue-in-cheek focusing on the loss of freedom (pre-sex-rev) or on absolute ruin (post-sex-rev).

It’s a shame that neither media focuses on more constructive topics.
